Corrective work order management

Deficiencies on a bulk carrier are discovered during routine inspections, during maintenance work, by crew reports and during external inspections by class surveyors, PSC officers or vetting inspectors. Each deficiency should generate a corrective work order with a description, severity classification, responsible party, target close-out date and, when closed, a record of what was done and what parts were used. A maintenance system that captures corrective work orders in a structured format — rather than in free-text email chains or paper deficiency lists — creates the auditable deficiency record that superintendents need and that external inspectors look for.

Maintenance history and handover

Crew changes on bulk carriers create a knowledge transfer risk: the Chief Engineer who serviced the main engine turbocharger three months ago is no longer on board, and the incoming engineer has no record of what was done. A maintenance system with a complete, timestamped maintenance history for each equipment item provides the incoming Chief Engineer with the context they need to manage the vessel’s maintenance programme without starting from scratch.
