What is a tanker CMMS?

A tanker CMMS manages planned maintenance, equipment records and spare parts for tanker vessels — purpose-built for the safety-critical machinery and compliance environment of tanker operations.

A tanker CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) is a digital maintenance platform configured specifically for the equipment, safety systems and compliance environment of oil, product and chemical tankers. It manages planned and corrective maintenance across cargo pumps, inert gas systems, mooring equipment, fire and gas detection systems and all other vessel machinery — on a single platform built to function both on board and from shore.

The distinction between a generic maritime CMMS and a tanker CMMS is not cosmetic. Tanker vessels operate critical cargo-handling systems — cargo pumps, hydraulic systems, inert gas generators, Vapour Emission Control systems — that require maintenance management fundamentally different from bulk carrier or container ship machinery. Failure in these systems does not result in a delayed voyage; it results in an operational stop, a cargo rejection or a safety incident.

What a tanker CMMS must manage that others do not

The maintenance scope on a tanker is broader and more safety-critical than on most other commercial vessel types. A purpose-built tanker CMMS needs to handle cargo pump maintenance — including performance testing and seal servicing — on running hours intervals that reflect actual operational use rather than calendar time alone. Inert gas systems require both planned maintenance and operational readiness checks before each cargo loading, with documentation of completion that inspectors verify during SIRE and PSC calls.

Mooring equipment maintenance is class-mandated and must be documented against class survey intervals with competency records attached. Safety-critical equipment — fire pumps, lifesaving appliances, fixed firefighting systems — must be maintained to ISM Code standards with job completion signed off by the responsible officer on board. A CMMS that cannot handle these parallel maintenance demands — calendar, running hours, class intervals and ISM obligations simultaneously — will always create compliance gaps that become visible during inspections.

ISM Code compliance through planned maintenance

The ISM Code requires shipping companies to establish a planned maintenance system and document that maintenance is carried out systematically. For tanker operators, this obligation intersects directly with SIRE vetting and PSC inspections: the digital maintenance record that the ISM auditor reviews is the same record the SIRE inspector evaluates and the PSC officer checks when boarding in port.

This overlap means that maintenance recording discipline on board has direct commercial consequences. Maintenance completed but not documented in the CMMS is, from an inspection perspective, maintenance not completed. Technical superintendents who understand this manage their tanker CMMS as a compliance tool as much as an operational one — because that is exactly how inspectors treat it.

Running hours, class intervals and flag state requirements

Tanker machinery maintenance operates on multiple overlapping interval systems that a purpose-built CMMS must handle simultaneously. Main engine maintenance follows manufacturer-specified running hours intervals that accumulate at different rates depending on voyage patterns. Classification society surveys impose calendar and running hours deadlines that must be tracked against current class certification. Flag state requirements add additional mandatory maintenance and testing obligations that vary by vessel type and registry.

A tanker CMMS that cannot reflect this multi-interval reality accurately will generate overdue alerts for work that is not technically overdue, or fail to alert for work that is. Both failure modes create inspection risk. The system must reflect how tanker machinery is actually maintained — not how a generic maintenance template assumes it is.

Offline capability and connectivity on tankers at sea

Tankers frequently operate in areas with limited or expensive satellite connectivity. A tanker CMMS must function fully offline on board, allowing the chief engineer and crew to record completed jobs, consume spare parts from inventory and complete documentation without any internet connection. When the vessel enters a port or a connectivity window opens, synchronisation to the shore team must be automatic and complete.
